[Re]-Introducing Defense by Thesis: Celebrating One Year of Securing Decentralized Tech

I’m thrilled to reintroduce Defense by Thesis––our rebrand, new website, and our mission and vision for the future.

Our History

I co-founded Defense in October 2023 with an ambitious goal: to transform crypto and web3 by improving the security of decentralized technologies to encourage broad adoption and promote user freedom. In the last year, we’ve built a team of security auditing veterans, helped secure projects across multiple ecosystems, and established ourselves as a pivotal contributor to the security of decentralized technology in crypto and web3. As we mark our one year anniversary, we’re more optimistic about the future and our ambitious roadmap than ever.

Before I talk more about the future, I’d like to acknowledge the people, teams, and projects that helped us realize our ambitions. We’re extremely grateful to our customers and builders for the trust they placed in us to audit their projects, our partners for standing with us and helping us establish recognition, and, finally, Thesis Inc., the pioneering Bitcoin-first venture studio behind projects including tBTC, Fold, Taho, Acre, and Mezo.

Their support of the Defense vision allowed us to bring in top talent in crypto and web3 security and build the team of our dreams.

If you’re reading this, you probably already believe in the revolutionary and undeniable potential of decentralized technology. However, we still face obstacles prohibiting broad adoption, including hacks that paralyze both the reputation and the stability of our space, resulting in destabilizing market swings that undermine us collectively. To be explicitly clear: while hacks dropped in 2023 compared to the previous year, hackers stole a whopping $1.4 billion in crypto by late June 2024, compared with less than half that amount for the same period in 2023.

Our Mission & Vision

As we move into our second year, our mission has evolved to reflect not only the growing importance of security in our industry, but also our desire to empower individuals by ensuring the integrity of emerging technologies to promote a decentralized future.

We believe that by strengthening the security of emerging technologies, we will inevitably promote a decentralized future and user freedom. And our vision for the future? To be the leading Bitcoin applied cryptography and security auditing firm for teams building decentralized technologies in crypto and web3.

A New Brand Reflecting Our Identity

In recognition of our evolution, we’re excited to unveil our new brand and website—signaling a subtle shift in our identity (we’ll have more about that to share soon!). Our new website is also designed to enhance the customer experience and provide clarity on our services, team, track record, and capabilities.

While our look has changed, there are some things that will never change. Defense will continue to be a leader in crypto and web3 security auditing, and our guiding principles—decentralization, censorship resistance, data self-agency, transparency, and integrity—will remain at the heart of everything we do.

As we embark on this exciting new chapter with our rebrand and vision, we're just getting started. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements in the coming weeks, including the introduction of new roles and talented team members who will help us drive our work forward. Big things are on the horizon, and we can’t wait to share them with you!
